March 19th Third Saturday Work Day

On Saturday, March 19th, we’ll have our Third Saturday work day back at the Laura Hare Nature Preserve at Downey Hill. We finished the north section of the trail on the last workday. so this month we’ll start the new south section. This section will go up and down even more hills and cross more creeks, so it will be another great project!

Due to limited parking availability at the work site, we’ll meet at the nearby Country Gospel Music Church on SR 46 and carpool to the preserve. People with four-wheel drive vehicles can transport people from the church and park inside the gate at the preserve.

We’ll meet at 9:00 am Saturday at:
Country Gospel Music Church
5181 E. St. Rd. 46
Nashville, Indiana 47448

It’s a large, white church on the south side of SR 46 just west of Valley Branch Road.

The preserve itself is on Valley Branch Road, about one and a half miles south of SR 46. You can find more information about the preserve at: http://sycamorelandtrust.org/downey-hill. Note that we will park in the gravel parking lot off Valley Branch Road on the west side of the preserve.

As usual we’ll work until about 3:00 pm, rain or shine, with a break for lunch at noon. Bring gloves and water. HHC will provide tools and lunch. Please RSVP to hoosierhikerscouncil@gmail.com to let us know that you’re coming so we can plan enough lunch for all the workers.

If the weather looks iffy, check the Recent Posts column on the HHC website and visit the HHC Facebook page for potential cancellation notices. We’ll post these notices by 7:00 am on the day of the event.

NOTE: The May workday will be held on Saturday, May 14, instead of the third Saturday in May, and there will be a special camping outing after the trail workday on May 14th.  This a rescheduling of the camping date proposed for April. An HHC long-time member has invited the group to their property which is near the work-site:  “I’d like to invite the HHC workers on Saturday April 16th to camp out at my place.  Folks could tent near-by or out in the woods, sleep in the beds in the house, bring in their sleeping bags, sleep in their cars.  Whatever would work.  I’d make something for supper.  Bring whatever beverages are desired.  We could have a fire, take a boat ride, use the hot tub, take a walk around the lake, relax and converse.”  Everyone who attends the full workday is invited to this event.  Please contact Patrick Eaton at xxx to RSVP for this event.  If there is interest among those staying Saturday night, we might hike the new south trail route of the Laura Hare Nature Preserve at Downey Hill on Sunday May 15th.

ALSO: Remember to come to the HHC’s 21st Annual Meeting to be held on Saturday, March 12th, at the Lutheran Hills Camp near Helmsburg in Brown County. There will be hikes, a presentation on archaeology in Indiana’s state forests, pitch-in dinner, and door prizes (Dick’s gift certificates, Annual State Park passes, and more!).
