On Saturday, May 19th, the Hoosier Hikers Council will be back to work on the new trail at the Bluffs of Beaver Bend Nature Preserve near the town of Shoals in Martin County. This new trail will be about two and a half miles long, and it will highlight views from tall bluffs above White River as well as a mature woodland with large trees and interesting rock formations. With last month’s great weather and enthusiastic workers, we made quite a bit of progress on the trail! Please RSVP to hoosierhikerscouncil@gmail.com to let us know that you’re coming so we can plan enough lunch for all the workers. Please be aware that we unfortunately don’t have the resources to accommodate special dietary needs such as vegetarian, gluten-free, etc. Also, please bring your own drink for lunch since the lunch site is quite a haul from the parking lot.
The preserve is located just south of Shoals, which is about 30 miles southwest of Bedford on US 50. From Shoals, go south at the flashing yellow light at the intersection of US 50 and Main Street. Follow this road through town to the T at Water Street/Spout Springs Road. Turn left on Spout Springs Road and continue for about a mile to an unmarked road on the right just after crossing a bridge. There’s a parking area about 500 feet down the road. Here’s a link to a Google map showing the preserve:
We’ll meet at 9:00 am at the preserve parking area, and we’ll work until 3:00 pm with a break for lunch. Please bring water and work gloves, the HHC will provide tools, lunch and training.
If the weather looks iffy, check the HHC Facebook page and the HHC website for a cancellation notice. We’ll post the notice by 5:00 am on the work day.
