In 2002 the Hoosier Hikers Council began a program of rehabilitation of Indiana's landmark Knobstone Trail. As it was initially conceived of as a 140-mile footpath following the Knobstone escarpment, in 1996 the HHC had began a program to complete its extension from 45 miles to the full 140-miles in length. Hoosiers owe a debt to those whose vision of the trail helped create it in the 1970s. The HHC was founded in order to improve the state's trails; the KT deserves its attention in order to preserve this treasure

Maintenance of the Knobstone Trail has been a chronic problem for years. This is due to the way in which the footpath was originally laid out. The task was given to enthusiastic but largely untrained volunteers. As a result, most up and down hill segments follow bee-line routes (the fall line, which collects and channels rainfall onto, instead of off, the trail). This has inevitably resulted in eroded, often totally destroyed trails and slopes. These segments are extremely unsightly, but more importantly, they represent destruction of the resource. The eroded conditions include the total removal of all topsoil and growing plants, and the creation of ditches, trenches, or gullies, some more than waist deep.

These improperly designed and drained trails have also made the KT unnecessarily difficult and stressful to hike. This has greatly limited the appeal and usefulness of the trail for the citizens of Indiana. Perhaps more importantly, the eroding, steep slopes with loose soil and stones and sloping, improperly designed steps (slippery when wet) represent serious safety hazards to users.

The eroding hillsides have often been treated with the installation of steps, instead of the redesign of the trail to ensure better drainage and longevity. Steps are ordinarily used only as a last resort where ownership restricts the use of contour or switchback designs (the reason for some of the KT steps). Steps are costly, and require considerable skill to install properly. Some KT repair crews have not been experienced enough to do this well. Contour trails allow best drainage, and best views.

The HHC has begun redesigning the eroding fall-line trails. This will take many years. When completed, the KT will become a low-maintenance, sustainable route.

(***)In the following table, the level of threat to the resource is marked by asterisks (*). One asterisk (*) indicates inevitable potential for harm, due to inadequate drainage. Two (**) indicate presence of active erosion, significant damage such as ditching and trenching, and conditions which can result in permanent environmental damage. Three asterisks (***) indicate that permanent, irreversible destruction of the slope or ridge has already occurred, with removal of soil and plant cover and cracks in the soil structure and deep gullies. Active erosion is accelerating and should be halted at the first available opportunity. Four (****) is highest priority.

Mileages in the table are approximate, and calculated without the aid of a GPS device.

Adopting the Appalachian Trail practice of using blue blazes for all access trails would prevent confusion in several areas.

Steps eroding; water bars above are full; needs reverse-grade dips for permanent drainage.
MILE PROBLEM REPAIR NEEDED (or Completed) HHC FIX DATE
0Trailhead: entry eroded.Redesign for better drainage.
3.9**Foot bed ditching—trail is straight uphill and then down again, on fall line. Relocate on contour, off fall line, with proper drainage.
4.8*** At road: steps are in ditch.Relocate on contour.
5.1**Steep downhill, fresh clay ditch.Switchback work; remove cribbing logs. Cribbing holds water on trail.FIXED - DNR?
5.2**** Big hole in trail near unnecessary uphillTake trail around hole, eliminate uphill; short contour reroute available.
5.+New Jackson Rd. Trailhead access track Service road-eroding badly. Has NO drainage devices. Sign is excellent, white access blazes are confusing. CSF needs to install road drainage chutes. KT access route should be marked with AT standard blue blazes. White road blazes must be removed.
5.4***Uphill N. of Bartle Knob Crk: trl. entirely double trenched (5 feet deep) RELOCATED OFF FALL LINE, TRENCHES FILLED.9/15/02
5.7**2 Trails ahead, no blazes visible.Blaze actual trail.
5.8**Uphill N. to Round Knob: trl. trenched. Center of ridge, trail destroyed. Old trail opened againâ-bike, horses CONTOUR ROUTE BENCHED, TRENCH FILLED, LANDSCAPE RECLAIMED. Thoroughly block trail!!!! DNR?9/16/02
6.0**Round Knob. Old trail access to top follows fall lineâ-destroying slope. Both trails blazed white; confusing. Design properly drained trail. Replace user-"designedâ" trail. DNR: Use blue blaze for Top trail.
6.1Deep trench.CONTOUR TRAIL AROUND SLOPE BUILT.11/14/04
6.2***Trail to Jackson Rd. Follows fall line. Many old steps on slope; all washed out. (Wooded) hillside is being destroyed. PROPERLY DRAINED TRAIL BUILT, BENCHED ON THE CONTOUR, TRENCH FILLED, EROSION BLOCKED, SLOPE RECLAIMED. 6/12-13/04
11/13/04
6.9*** Horses are punching out sides of narrow trail along Thompson Rd. New Horse Operation near trail; DNR must send notice to owners: keep off trail.
7.2****Trail at rock ledge. Downhill from ledge, fall-line trail very destroyed. New part of trail here is ditching. TRAIL RELOCATED OFF FALL LINE. EROSION CHANNEL BLOCKED, SLOPE RECLAIMED. Improved drainage needed.5/10-11/03
10/4-5/03
7.9**Fall-line trail has gullied hill. Small uphill going N. Install switchbacks, many drains.
8.0*Approach to mile 8: KT joins horse trail for short distance; confusing, Blazes missing. KT should follow edge of ridge short distance, then cross horse trail. Easy fix. Needs "no horse" decal on carsonite post.
8.9**Trail goes up fall line; ditching. Will destroy entire hillside soon. Horses using trail from Pixley Knob Rd. Install contour route. Install carsonite post, "no horse" decal at road entrance onto trail.
9.5**Uphill (N) on narrow ridge, ditching.Needs drains.
10.9****Steps just south of Rt. 160. Dangerous: sloping (dangerous when wet); too far apart-cannot be used by hikers. Construct free-standing wood steps off site, set in concrete. Might get grant $$ for this.
11.0*Trail lined with cribbing; does not allow cross drainage; will ditch.Erosion beginning; remove cribbing logs preventing cross drainage.
13.5**Descent dangerously steep; steps missing, eroded. Smooth clay exposed.Reroute with proper drainage. Fixing steps would be wasteful and inadequate.
13.9**Small, eroding, nearly vertical gully crossing. Steep, ditching trail above gully.Reroute short distance upstream with a ramp-type cross-slope banked trail. Relocate trail from fall line to contour.
15.0***Extremely steep—straight up fall line. Reroute—difficult, but needed; no steps.
15.2*Descent to stream in tiny hollow. 45 degree grade? Dangerous to hike on.Best treatment possible may be addition of more steps-estimate about 15.
15.5**Extremely steep: 50 ft. straight up.Replace with easy contour trail.
15.8*Trail on steep side slope; foot bed slants.Bench trail to widen and prevent slipping into creek below
15.9**Steep, eroding trail up&out of hollow.Take trail off fall line with switchback.

16.0*Trail parallels legal horse trail; horse trail is a steep, eroded mud ditch, with mud flowing down into creek. Fix horse trail before horse riders start using the KT because their trail is impassable.
16.9***Up hill to 17.0; ditching. Just N of road; old uphill deeply ditched.Needs contour re-route to prevent trail destruction. Contour available to replace huge ditch.
17.0*New Chapel; horse use is damaging what should be a flat trail is ditching due to horse use.Erect signs to keep horses off. Identify source of horse traffic. A legal horse trail ends on opposite side of highway; riders perhaps continue across road on KT.
18.0*Some ditching of trail due to horse use.Erect signs to keep horses off KT; legal horse trail nearby.
18.2KT joins horse trail.Best practice: route KT onto parallel track.
19.0*Descent/ascent trail ditching on hillsides. Roots exposed, gullies forming. Horses punching out sides of narrow foot bed. Siting is good, but needs reverse grade drainages. Needs signage to keep horses off trail
19.1?**Newish nice trail, but no drains. N after flat "horse" trail.Install drainage dips before erosion destroys trail.
19.2**Joins horse trail; confusing exit. Needs KT "no horse" decal.Needs rerouting, with simple perpendicular crossing, short parallel trail till KT exits flat. This would help keep horses on horse trail.
19.8****Descent on unusable set of 100 steps. 20 steps washed out, sticking out in thin air, EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS.EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, TECHNICAL BENCHED CONTOUR REROUTE DESIGNED & BUILT.3/26-27/05
4/23-24/05
20.3Old deadfall in trail; confusing.Blaze trail correctly.
20.5****KT joins ATV/horse trail.KT becomes a wide, MUD HOLED road due to ATV use. Stop ATV use or relocate trail to nearby edge of hollow.
20+***ATV track exits to left; KT continues ahead but is not blazed.DNR is working on the ATV problem, we are told. Erect sign(s) at point of entry onto public property.
21+***KT ascends steeply on badly ditched trail, but it is not blazed.Relocate trail on contour line; erect "no horse" sign at KT exit from horse trail at 19.2
22.1**Trail is unsafely steep in two places."Elbows" of two switchbacks need lengthening. 11/5-6/02
24.0***Descent begins well but ends in GIANT erosion gully; water draining from ridgetop.Good site for switchbacks, but long. NO STEPS! Much recovery work needed.
24.4*Trail along stream bank is being undercut.Put on schedule for simple small relocation.
24.5**At Pixley Knob Rd.; very steep steps S. of Rd., ROAD WALK on narrow curve. N. of Rd.-ditching.Route available on narrow ridge just opposite steps to eliminate road walk. Install switchbacks. Install small, drained switchbacks.
24.6***Leota Trailhead. Old road bed ditching to Steep descent, severe ditching.Install drainage devices on old roadbed. Put trail back on old KT contour track. 6/1/02
24.8**Steep descent, trail trenching from use by motorbikes. Hillside partly destroyed.Take trail off fall line; recover hill. Block motorbike routes off ridge. 6/2/02
24.9**Steep ascent with some nice switchbacks ditching due to lack of drainage features.Install drainage features: switchback water "chutes," reverse-grade dips. 6/2/02
25.0*Carsonite mile post missing 10/01Replace post.
25.3*Trail, motorcycle track in fall-line ditch. Berms on north side need removing (7/05) REPLACED WITH CONTOUR REROUTE. MOTORCYCLES STILL USING OLD ROUTE.4/99
25-26***Numerous steep ascents and descents, with gullies; entire trail, whole hillside, set of steps eroding; old abandoned trail still being used; old blazes still visible.Design well-drained trail, off the fall line
26.1****Just north of mile 26, terrible gullying, 3-4 feet deep. Junction with old road, horse use; is this legal?b>FIXED WITH CONTOUR REROUTE. SIDE OF OLD DITCH REMOVED, USED FOR FILL. Horse use diminished.9, 10/05
26.9****KT becomes ATV track where trail turns away from lake.DNR/Forest Service Property Manager must enforce the law-install sign and barriers at entry point.
27.1**Eroding trail ascends straight up a very long hill on the fall line.Reverse-grade drains essential to keep trail bed from being destroyed.
27.2**Entry point for ATV track.
27.5***Ski-jump trail down hill and up far side. There's room for a switchback. NO STEPS!
27.7**New-looking too-steep switchback with absolutely no drainage structures, will erode. Install reverse-grade dips, short switchback at top, to lessen severe grade on fall line.
27.9***Descent is one big eroding gully.Design trail off the fall line.
28.0*Trail above creek slopes; danger of hiker slipping off trail.Bench trail to proper grade.
28.2***ATV track—newish looking.???
28.3-9***Several ditched ascents, descents. Trail has become water drain, unwalkable with roots crisscrossing trail.Reroute on contour, off fall line.
29.0-1***5-foot deep ditch, down to bedrock.Old trail nearby—reclaimable? Reverse grade dips might save it.
29.+New trail N.of Long Knob—almost totally on fall line-no drainage features. Ascent further up trail-needs sw.bk. Lacks benching-punched out by horses?Install reverse-grade drainage features, switchbacks on contour where necessary. Ascent fixable in 1 hour. Benching 1 hour.
29.8-30***Joins ATV and (legal?) horse track. Trail so steep falling is inevitable.ATVs: HOPELESS. TECHNICAL CONTOUR REROUTE BUILT.Mar/Apr 2006
30.5***Steep uphill from lake in old road trench. Eroding, undrainable. ATV through route.Reroute.
31.3**Steps down from knob; rise is too high. Unusable ascending. Pointless Up&DownNo view on top. Reroute on contour around knob.
31.5***Trail has turned into a swamp.TRAIL REROUTED OUT OF BOTTOMSSept/Nov 2006
32.0***Trail straight down fall line; hill being destroyed. Bare roots-needs diversion.Design trail on contour.
33.0*New cribbing on side of steep hill trail will cause trenching, prevent drainage.Put gaps in or eliminate cribbing.
33.4**Put proper drains above steps.
33.7-9**Series of ascents/descents ditching in spire of water brs.Install reverse-grade drains, some small switchbacks for drainage.
34.5*Descent to Rt. 56 is on fall line, will erode.Improve with drainage features.
34.6**Both sides of road, and trail off ridge N. of road: trail is steep and needs switchbacks and drainage. Slippery (S.) and ditching (N.) to roots, deep clay "V." Steps too far apart.Drainage, some easy switchbacks. Replace steps with contoured trail.
36.0***Preposterous, giant steps—unusable, old washed out step remnants-rebar in trail. Eroded, exposed roots in trail.Replace steps with switchback, drainage structures.
37.0*Steep trail down to trailhead.Follow obvious contour line.
38.0**Eroded.Design rerouted trail on contour.
38.3**Creek entry on trail may be problem.Improve drainage.
38.5*Ascent problem.Switchback?
40.7***Very steep, badly eroded descent.Switchbacks needed, on contour if possible.
